Genesis 32:22

32:22 During the night Jacob quickly took ¹  his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons ²  and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. ³ 

Numbers 21:24

21:24 But the Israelites ⁴  defeated him in battle ⁵  and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strongly defended.

Joshua 12:2

12:2 King Sihon of the Amorites who lived ⁶  in Heshbon and ruled from Aroer (on the edge of the Arnon Valley) – including the city in the middle of the valley ⁷  and half of Gilead – all the way to the Jabbok Valley bordering Ammonite territory.

[32:22]  ¹ tn Heb “and he arose in that night and he took.” The first verb is adverbial, indicating that he carried out the crossing right away.

[32:22]  ² tn The Hebrew term used here is יֶלֶד (yeled) which typically describes male offspring. Some translations render the term “children” but this is a problem because by this time Jacob had twelve children in all, including one daughter, Dinah, born to Leah (Gen 30:21). Benjamin, his twelfth son and thirteenth child, was not born until later (Gen 35:16-19).

[32:22]  ³ sn Hebrew narrative style often includes a summary statement of the whole passage followed by a more detailed report of the event. Here v. 22 is the summary statement, while v. 23 begins the detailed account.

[21:24]  ⁴ tn The Hebrew text has “Israel,” but the verb is plural.

[21:24]  ⁵ tn Heb “with the edge of the sword.”

[12:2]  ⁶ tn Or perhaps, “reigned.”

[12:2]  ⁷ tc The MT reads here, “and the middle of the valley,” but the reading “the city in the middle of valley” can be reconstructed on the basis of Josh 13:9, 16.
